walk and talk therapy

“When you bring your attention to a stone, a tree or an animal, something of its essence transmits itself to you. You can sense how still it is and in doing so the same stillness rises within you. You can sense how deeply it rests in being, completely one with what it is and where it is, in realizing this, you too come to a place or rest deep within yourself.”

-Eckhart Tolle

what is walk and talk therapy?

Walk and Talk Therapy happens when your therapy session takes place while walking or hiking with your therapist, instead of in a therapy room indoors. The setting can be a public park or on local trails. The movement can help people feel more at ease with opening up so some prefer it over telehealth or office based counseling.

special considerations

privacy concerns

Walk and talk therapy takes place in a public area (park, trail etc.) where other folks may or may not be around. As a result, it offers less privacy than a traditional therapy setting. In our first 1-3 sessions, we will go over expectations, confidentiality concerns and establish what actions we will take should we see someone that you or I know.

physical limitations and ability

Every body is different and has different limitations and functioning capabilities. These factors may impact where or how we engage in a walk and talk therapy session. Prior to our first therapy walk, we will discuss any potential physical limitations, preferences and accommodations. Which might look like incorporating some extended seating times on a bench or other area.

weather limitations

Weather can be a limitation for walk and talk therapy. Extreme temperatures, such as heat or cold, can make walking uncomfortable or unsafe. Rain or other inclement weather can also make walking difficult or unpleasant. At times, you may need to be prepared to modify or reschedule sessions if weather conditions are not conducive to safe or comfortable walking.

location

I only offer walk and talk therapy in the San Antonio area at this time. I understand that doing outdoor therapy where you live can create a situation in which you are seeing people that you know. Because of that possibility, you have the ability to request a walking trail or location that is an adequate distance from your neighborhood or places you frequent if you want.
